7th Joint Reggae Bar (Yangon)

I found the 7th Joint Bar in Yangon by accident. It was past midnight and I was walking back to my hotel when I heard some noise coming from a tiny alley.

I went to see what it was all about and discovered a small live music bar packed with foreigners (with also a few Burmese girls and guys). I would guess that most guests were expats, probably working in NGOs, embassies or schools. If you are new in the city and need to meet people, I would recommend you to go there.

It was an open-mic night (like every Tuesday) and the singers were quite talented. For once, it was nice to hear something else than Lady Gaga, ABBA and Adele. There was a bit of everything from indie-pop to blues.

The place is on two floors but it can hardly fit more than 100 people. They have a limited dining menu with some American snacks (around 2,000-3,000MMK each) and Jamaican specialties (jerk and curries for 5,000-9,000MMK).

The drink menu has all the usual, from draught beer (2,000MMK) to cocktails (6,000MMK).

Overall: A good address to try during the week (especially on Tuesdays). Friendly and relaxed atmosphere.

Note: Even though the bar is called 7th Joint Reggae Bar, nobody was smoking marijuana (and there was no reggae music).

Operating Hours:
Every day until 1.30AM.
