McGettigan's Irish Pub and Sports Bar (Jakarta)

McGettigan's is a brand-new Irish pub and sports bar that had its grand opening on May 16th, 2017. Located in Mega Kuningan, in the basement of Menara BTPN, it is part of a larger group with 15 locations around the world (including Dubai, Singapore, New York, and of course Ireland - see more here: McGettigan's).

I had a chance to visit it a few weeks before their official opening on a Saturday night and what I saw looked promising.

McGettigan's is easy to find, just across the road from the Ritz-Carlton, and walking distance from famous bars like Loewy or Basque. It is in a business district so it gets particularly busy for lunch and after office hours.

It is built on one spacious floor, with several distinct spaces for customers to sit down: On the left corner, a quiet dining area with private booths and tables. In the back, a long and elegant bar that serves 8 kinds of draught beer. In the center, several high tables and chairs for more casual meals and drinking. On the right, a few VIP booths and tables for larger groups, next to the live music stage. Finally, there is an outdoor terrace with a view of a small courtyard. At full capacity, I wouldn't be surprised if it can accommodate 300 people.

The first thing I noticed was that it certainly doesn't look like your typical Irish pub. In fact, McGettigan's is much more modern, in a good way.

It seems to have been designed to be halfway between classy and cozy. They've kept the leather sofas and the Guinness but got rid of the traditional décor and antiques. Not a bad idea in 2017.

The menu is more conventional and features all the classic crowd-pleasers: Western ones like Burgers, Fish and Chips, Pies, Bangers and Mash, and Indonesian ones like Nasi Goreng, Sop Buntut, Iga Bakar. They also serve imported 200-gram and 300-gram Black Angus beefsteaks. If you are watching your weight, there are more healthy options like the Grilled Salmon and the Salads. In case you are wondering, pork is available.

They have added a family-friendly Kids' Menu, which is normally rare in bars in Jakarta.

The entertainment in McGettigan's is primarily sports-watching. Flat-screen HD TVs are everywhere (I counted at least 10 of them), featuring any live events worth cheering about: Football, NBA, Rugby, Moto GP, Formula 1, etc.

From Wednesday to Saturday, they also have live bands and DJs in the evenings. The current ladies night is on Wednesday (3 free drinks for girls from 8.30 PM to 11.30 PM).  They also have an Irish promotion every Thursday from 7 PM to 10 PM with IDR75,000++ for a pint of Kilkenny or Guinness., and IDR65,000++ for a Jameson Whiskey).
