Spiegel Bar and Bistro (Semarang)

Spiegel is one of the best cafés/bars/bistros to visit in Semarang if you are a tourist looking for a European/Colonial atmosphere.

It is housed in a recently renovated Dutch building in the middle of the old town. You also have a rooftop with a nice view of Semarang.

It is perfect for a drink/cocktail after visiting the city. I didn't tried the food. From what I was told the Chef is Scottish. They serve comfort food (pizza, burgers, sandwiches) and Mexican dishes.

The Tavern and Malbec Rooftop Bar (Semarang)

The Tavern is one of the most Westernized restaurants/bars in Semarang. Contrary to what the name might indicate, it isn't an old-style expat bar but a modern venue catering mostly to rich locals. On weekends, they might have DJs or live bands playing quite loud music.

If you are used to eating good Western food, you'll probably be disappointed in the Tavern. My recommendation is to go there for a drink only and to enjoy the view from their "Malbec" rooftop bar.

Overall: Trendy hangout spot in Semarang. Rather expensive. New and clean. Good view.

A to Z Bar is one of the trendiest hangout venues in Semarang at the moment. It is on the hills of Southern Semarang, with a good view on the city.

They serve all the most famous Western dishes with prices similar to what you would pay in Jakarta. For a 2 course meal without drinks, the final bill should be around Rp200,000 (more if you take beef).

They have a wide choice of spirits, beers and wines, currently unmatched in Semarang. It is a great spot to bring a date you would want to impress.

Live music on Monday and Wednesday. DJ on Saturday. Special events on their facebook page below.

STDs / HIV Check-up and Treatment in Jakarta

$

0
Many readers ask me where they can get a medical check-up for STDs such as AIDS, HIV, Chlamydia, Gonorrhea, Syphilis, Hepatitis, Herpes, HPV (Human Papillomavirus), Genital and Anal Warts, etc. I will give you a list of recommended places in this review, plus some tips about safe sex in Jakarta.

If you are wondering whether STDs are prevalent in Indonesia, the answer is "of course". If you are wondering whether you should get checked after sleeping with someone without a condom, the answer is "of course".

Sex education in Indonesia is almost non-existent, and very few people know about STDs. For many, condoms are just a way to come inside a vagina without making babies. It is very common for Indonesians, guys or girls, educated or not, to have sex without any protection.

Prostitutes working in famous bordellos are usually screened regularly and they will force clients to use condoms. It is not always the case for low-end working girls and freelancers. Many expats and Indonesians have multiple partners, switching from "normal girls" to "prostitutes". For this reason, even good girls can be infected and when they do, they are too shy to seek treatment or even visit a gynecologist.

AIDS has killed over 34,000 persons Indonesians according to the UN (see report) and yet the subject is still considered taboo. Instead of waiting for mentalities to evolve, I recommend you to stay safe and to get a regular check-up in one of the facilities mentioned below.

Angsamerah
Angsamerah is one of the best and cheapest places in Jakarta for HIV and STD check-up. They are currently in the process of relocating to Jalan Johar in Central Jakarta.

In the meantime, you can visit their Foundation Clinic on Jalan Panglima Polim Raya 6 in South Jakarta.

Prices
HIV test is around Rp300,000 (including Rp30,000 for administration fee, Rp200,000 for mandatory doctor appointment, Rp20,000 for the needle and Rp50,000 for the test)

For Gonorrhea/Chlamydia, the test is an additional Rp50,000 to Rp80,000 each.

You can get a full package including HIV, Syphilis and Urethral Discharge (+ doctor appointment) for Rp370,000.

Full price list available here: Angsamerah Test HIV.

Waiting Time:
You can get the results within 30-60 minutes.

Opening Hours:
From Monday to Friday from 9am to 9pm (last appointment 8pm).

HIV Test: Rp382,500. Doctor consultation not required.
For other STDs, it is advised to have a note from your doctor to make sure you do the right test.

Prodia
Prodia is also reputed for HIV and STDs screenings in Jakarta but it is more expensive than Bio Medika. It is convenient because there are dozens of locations in Jakarta and in every major Indonesian cities.

Prices:
The price for HIV testing is Rp391,000 but, surprisingly, you need to bring a note from your doctor. I don't really understand the point of this, especially considering they do not require it for other STDs check up.

Chlamydia test (IGM OR IGG) costs Rp727,000.
Herpes test IGM I: Rp352,000 and IGM II: Rp318,000

International SOS
Many expats prefer going to International SOS because it is their employer's recommended clinic. The standards are supposed to be better but the prices are much higher. Since they don't have their own laboratory, it also take a long time to receive the results.

Prices
You must do a consultation with their own doctor prior to the test. The price is Rp368,000 (for a General Practitioner) + Rp49,000 for Administration fee (Rp24,000 if you already are a client).

OTHER LABORATORIES, CLINICS AND HOSPITALS:

Several other clinics and hospitals I contacted have similar prices, from Rp300 to Rp450,000 for the HIV test. They include the following: Makmal ReproBioMedicineABC LabRS MMC (conveniently located in Kuningan).

Surprisingly, I didn't manage to get one person from Siloam Hospitals who knew the prices. I will try again soon.

Free HIV tests are available at Puskesmas (community public health centers) and public hospitals for people who have the KJS (Jakarta Health Card). For others, the prices is generally very low. The complete list of locations is available here: Location Free HIV test.

Bonobo Bar & Grill (Jakarta)

Bonobo is a bar and restaurant located in the ground floor of the Landmark building tower, near Nip & Dram. Recently opened in February 2016, it is part of the Stupa F&B group (behind Umbra in Kemang) and it replaces the late Downtown Bistro.

They haven't changed many things compared to the old venue. Bonobo looks simple and cozy, with a nice bay window running from one wall to the other.

It is too early to say anything about the crowd and the atmosphere, but we can expect trendy Jakartans and expats. The guest DJs they've had so far were excellent, playing hip-hop, soul and house.

Overall: Interesting to try on weekends for a pre-party drink but better to wait until they have a special event (see on facebook below). I don't know about the food taste yet as I didn't eat there. Prices are standard for Jakarta: Rp100k++ for drinks, Rp120,000++ for food.

Opening Hours (they are likely to change after the grand opening in March):
From Monday to Thursday from 9am to 6pm
Friday: 9am to 3am

Manila Nightlife: Best Clubs and Bars

$
0
0
Manilla nightlife is one of the best in Asia: Clubs and bars are crowded almost every night of the week. Pretty girls are everywhere, alcohol is cheap and foreigners are welcome.

This review will cover everything you need to know about partying in the whole Metro Manila, a huge urban area which is made of several cities including Manila, Makati, Pasay, Taguig and Quezon City.

I will answer the following questions: Why choosing Manila? Where to stay and party? What are the best clubs and bars in Manila? Where to meet Filipino girls? Where are the red light districts, massage parlours, strip clubs and gogo bars?

If you need more information or if you feel I missed something, please just leave a comment below at the end of the review.

Is Manila Recommended for Party?
I would recommend Manila nightlife for the following reasons:

- Cheap prices for alcohol, entrance fees and taxis: Even high-end nightclubs like Revel only charge  a 10$ entrance with 2 strong drinks included. You can easily get yourself drunk for 30 dollars in Manila, which is the price for one cocktail in some bars in Singapore.
- Foreigner-friendly: English is spoken everywhere in Manila, even by security guards or taxis. Filipinos are open-minded and easy-going. Dress codes are almost never implemented.
- Girl-friendly hotels: There are no issues with bringing girls back to your hotel in Manila.
- Rather easy to meet pretty girls that are not prostitutes: While prostitution is big in Manila with several red light districts, you also have a great dating and flirting scene with normal local girls.
- Clubs and bars open late and every day: You can go out any night of the week in Manila, you'll always find a crowded bar or nightclub. Sunday nights can be spent in B-Side, Mondays in ZZYZX and Tuesdays in Privé. The rest of the week is busy almost everywhere. There are no real curfews: Many clubs close at 6am, a few keep going until 8am.

There are a few negative sides about Manila though. The city is still developing and you won't see the kind of sophisticated bars and clubs as you would in Singapore, Bangkok or Jakarta (except maybe for Chaos).

Hotels are usually a bit more expensive than elsewhere in Southeast Asia and their quality is average. The internet is terrible, even when advertised as being fast. During the day, you may spend a lot of time in traffic (not as much as in Jakarta anyway). There is a metro but it is packed and hot. The food is not great unless you are a fan of junk food/American food.

If you are into paid sex, be aware that Manila is rather expensive too: Bar fines can reach almost a 100$!. Finally, security is an issue but it is quite exaggerated in my opinion. As long as you stay in safe neighborhoods  and use reputed taxi companies, you are not particularly at risk.

Where to Party in Manila?
Metro Manila is one of the largest metropolitan areas in the world. You cannot visit everything in one night of course.

The nightlife is active in the following areas, by order of personal preference:

- Makati is the first business district in Metro Manila and it is home to many expatriates. It is the most interesting place for party because there are both high-end clubs and bars + a lively red light district. It is also centrally located with many options for hotels and apartments. Go to Makati Avenue for coffee shops/bars/clubs, P Burgos Street for gogo bars and brothels and near Havana Café in Greenbelt 3 for freelancers.

- Bonifacio Global City (BGC or The Fort) is a newer business district that currently competes with Makati. It is more modern and attracts younger Filipinos and expats. It is built on a grid, meaning it's easy to go from one place to another. It's probably the safest area in Metro Manila. Accommodation is hard to find, especially in the budget segment. Go to The Fort Strip or to The Palace for trendy bars and clubs.

- Ermita/Malate are two districts of Manila located next to each other near the Manila Bay. They attract budget travelers, backpackers, tourists and Koreans/Japanese businessmen. It is also where most government buildings are. The area can be considered a red-light district with its Korean-style karaokes and its pubs with freelance prostitutes. You also have some street prostitution and a few popular expat bars. Go to Adriatico and nearby streets.

- Quezon City is actually the most populated city in the Philippines, before Manila. It is very authentic, mostly residential, with at least 10 good nightclubs, dozens of bars and a few karaokes/massage parlours. The crowd is usually young and almost 100% local. Prices are low. There used to be a red light area with naked striptease but it was closed down by the Mayor a few years ago. You can go to Tomas Morato Avenue, Timog Avenue, Quezon City Avenue and Cubao X (for hipsters).

- Pasay/Parañaque are two municipalities located around the airport, south of Manila. It is not the most recommended area except if you are looking for sex. In particular, you have the EDSA International Entertainment Complex, a sort of smaller local version of Nana Plaza with 6 bars lined up next to each other. You also have a few bordellos and gogo bars scattered around, for instance Universe Strip Club or Air Force One KTV. Finally, this is where the mall City of Dreams is located, with its 2 luxury nightclubs (Pangaea and Chaos).

You have secondary nightlife areas like in the Ortigas Business District (Metrowalk). The ambiance there is good natured with live music and families.

Best Nightclubs in Metro Manila
I have written reviews about each nightclubs in Manila and Quezon City. You can find the full articles here: Best Nightclubs in Manila and here: Best Nightclubs in Quezon City.

I list here my 11 favorites starting with the best. I usually go clubbing with 1 or 2 persons maximum so I tend to prefer when there is a dancefloor, a nice bar area and where it is easy to meet new people.

1) Black Market
The current trendy club in Manila among expats and hip Filipinos. Music is anything but EDM. Lots of pretty girls but not so easy to chat with them.

2) Valkyrie
Located in The Palace in Bonifacio Global City, it is huge and modern with a great party atmosphere. If you are new in Manila, Valkyrie is my first recommendation as you can meet girls easily. It is also connected to the Pool Club and Revel.

3) Chaos
Chaos is located in the mall/casino City of Dreams. It looks neat with a perfect sound system and high-end crowd. It is best enjoyed if you book at least a small table near the dancefloor.

4) Time
This small underground nightclub is famous for staying open until late in the morning. It has also the best DJs playing techno, minimal and electro-tech. Many expats.

5) Prime
Located in Quezon City, about 30 minutes from Makati without traffic, Prime is worth a visit if you want to experience another side of Manila nightlife: Younger, cheaper and more relaxed.

6) Revel
Revel is crowded with 30+ years old executives and expats. It could be a fantastic club but there is almost no dancefloor so unless you book a sofa, you don't really feel comfortable. It is connected to Valkyrie and The Pool Club. Easy for meeting girls.

7) Pangaea
Pangaea is the sister nightclub of Chaos in City of Dreams. It is rather intimate with a low ceiling and an NY-underground vibe (though it is a luxury place). They play mostly Rn'B.

8) Privé
Maybe the most exclusive nightclub in Manila, it is located in the Fort in BGC. You have a good crowd of expats and rich Filipinos. Some celebrities as well. They have a popular retro night every Tuesday.

9) Gramercy 71
Located on the 71st floor of the Gramercy tower in Makati, you have an indoor and an outdoor area with a nice view over Manila.

10) ZZYZX
This little club in Malate is packed every night of the week. Though targeting mostly Koreans, it is still one of my favorite places for party in Manila, especially on weekdays. You have a lot of pretty girls but 90% of them are freelance prostitutes.

11) URBN
URBN is more like a pub turned nightclub after midnight. Located next to the Fort Strip, it is considered to be a pick-up joint by many expats.

Clubs usually close around 5am-6am. If you want to keep going after that, you can go to Time, LA Café (open 24-hour with many freelance prostitutes) or Bronx (also a bar with working girls).

Best Bars in Metro Manila
You have hundreds of bars in Manila, from low-class joints in working-class neighborhoods to luxury rooftop bars in Makati.

I listed a few of them here: Best Bars in Manila.

Among my favorites, I like Cable Car, Borough, El Chupacabra and Draft. They are busy, they serve food and they get you all pumped up before party.

There are some more sophisticated venues targeting mainly expats and high-class Filipinos. The best ones are Hooch, famous for its cocktails, and Finders Keepers (next to Black Market).

Speakeasies are so trendy in Manila that it is kind of ridiculous to see so many bars having the same concept. Finders Keepers is the best. The other good ones are The Curator, ABV (Alcohol by Volume) or Blind Pig.

If you need alternative/hipster places, you can visit Today X Future and Fred's Revolucion in Quezon City (Cubao X). B-Side in Makati is great on Sundays for reggae lovers.

Manila is one of the best places in Southeast Asia for live music. You can listen to any genre in hundreds of bars, but these are the current top spots:

Rock Music: Craft, The Brewery @ The Palace, Handlebar
Oldies/Retro: Strumm's
Indie Rock/Acoustic: 12 Monkeys, Saguijo, Tomato Kick, Route 196
Jazz, World Music, Reggae: Tago, The Bar @ 1951, B-Side

Where to Meet (Normal) Filipino Girls?
Filipino girls are very friendly and they are interested to meet with foreigners. Most are quite religious though (Catholic), and living with their families. For this reason, one night stands and hook-ups are not that common unless you go to the right clubs and bars.

A good idea is to download a few dating apps like Tinder, Badoo or Skout. If you fill your profile with an honest, witty description and nice pictures, you should get a fair number of matches.

The big problem with those apps is that most girls are looking for expats who actually live in the Philippines. If you are in Manila for a few days only, they will see you as a tourist hungry for casual sex and they hate that. Those girls might be ok to meet with you, but they will act cold and they will make you waste your time. Personally, I filter girls to meet only the ones who enjoy going to clubs and who drink alcohol. Girls who don't like those are usually uptight and still looking for their Prince Charming. Avoid at all cost unless you're looking for a wife.

If you are looking for one night stands, then clubs and bars are probably your best options. You can either invite a date from a Tinder/Badoo or find someone directly there.

If you are an expat, I would say your best chances to meet with a Filipino girl are in the following venues: ValkyrieChaosRevelPangaeaPrivéURBN and Paradis. Quezon City is a bit more difficult compared to Manila nightlife because girls are not used to be approached by foreigners. You may try Guilly's there.

Gogo Bars, Striptease, Red Light Districts, Massage Parlours:
There is a lot of prostitution in Manila (though less than in the city of Angeles). For foreigners, you have 3 main red light districts:
- P Burgos Street in Makati (mostly gogo bars, massage parlours and street prostitution) - Beware, there is also a Burgos street in Manila but it's not the right one.
- EDSA Entertainment Complex in Pasay: A similar, yet cheaper alternative to Burgos
- Malate/Ermita: A mix of everything from street prostitutes, Korean KTVs, spas and freelance bars

In the past 10 years, the local governments of some municipalities have put pressure on venues owners in an attempt to curb prostitution. This can be seen in Malate/Ermita and Quezon City where most gogo bars and naughty massage parlours have shut down. Police raids are rather common on such establishments.

You also have some very local places in working class neighborhoods but for safety reasons, I would strongly advise you to avoid unless you are familiar with the city.

In the past few years, a lot of the action has moved online, particularly on WeChat. The app is full of prostitutes and escorts that are quite easy to contact using the "Look Around" feature.

Massage Plus Plus:
In terms of quality, massage parlours in Manila cannot compare with those in Bangkok or Jakarta. They are mostly disguised brothels without a real massage. You usually pay for the room a certain amount and then pay a tip to the girl depending on the service. It is rather pricey: The decent ones will cost you at least 50$.

The most high-end massage parlour in Manila is probably Flight 168, which is attached to the KTV Air Force One. Several services are included there for a price starting 90$.

The best-value massage parlours plus plus in Metro Manila are located in Quezon City on Quezon Avenue. The famous ones are Kremlin, Wilderness and Pegasus.

Nuru massage / Thai Massage / Soapy are available in Starfleet in Parañaque, not too far away from the airport.

For 24 hour massage parlour in Manila, there used to be Palacio Don Pedro in Makati but it was shut down by the police.

Many street girls will offer you massage on the streets of Burgos in Makati. The quality is usually poor.

Gogo Bars:
Gogo bars in Manila are quite similar to those you can find in Bangkok in places like Soi Cowboy or Nana Plaza. The main difference is that prices are much higher, in particular for the bar fine which can reach between 50$-80$ in Burgos street. This does not include what you pay to the girl, usually another 50$. The best ones are Kojax, Ringside Bar (a kind of blowjob bar too which features Midget Boxing) and G-String (very friendly). More venues: Best Gogo Bars in Manila.

Some of the bars have rooms where you can have sex. I'll recommend Plan B for that. Price is the same as the bar fine + tip for the girl.

EDSA Entertainment Complex has cheaper prices, but the bars are not as numerous and the quality of girls is lower.

You can also look at my list of the Best Girlie Bars in Manila where I included all the gogo bars and the venues with a high proportion of freelancers.

Stripclubs:
In terms of striptease, there is only one place that I could find with full nudity in Manila. It is called Universe and it is located in Pasay. Horizon Gentleman's VIP Club has real pole dancing shows, Las-Vegas style, but the girls don't strip naked.

Some gogo bars in Burgos street are hotter than others. In particular, Bottoms Bar where ladies' drinks can create miracles and make bras disappear.

Karaoke and Digital KTV
Popular family karaokes in Manila include CenterStage (Pasay and Makati) or the chain Music 21 (several locations).

My guess is that you are more interested in sexy karaokes with hostesses and hot lady companions. In this case, most of them are in Ermita/Malate (Korean and Japanese). You also have a few in Burgos Street (Makati), in Quezon City and around the airport.

In Ermita/Malate, you can just walk on Adriatico, Mabini, Bocobos and Remedios street and you'll see a lot of of them with girls waiting outside in sexy dresses.

In general, you pay an entrance fee of 500PHP. This gives you access to free booze and food for a certain amount of time in the common area. The common area is quite similar to any bar with hostesses/bar girls except that you can sing. There might be a show sometimes (just singing). You can call the girl you like, chat with her and buy her ladies' drinks. You can also get some private time with her in a room, but this generally does not include anything sexual. The girl will usually give you her phone number and you can meet her outside for lunch or dinner. What happens next is just between you and her.

The famous ones are Room 526 (the most luxurious with the hottest girls), Subaru (but girls there are mostly interested with Japanese and Korean customers), Mysterious Lady Angel KTV Bar, Vogue KTV and Upstage.

KTVs in Malate rarely have bedrooms inside. If you want sex, you must go to other municipalities:

In Quezon City, check Classmate, Pegasus and Heartbeat.

Around the airport, the best one is Air Force One (next to the massage parlour Flight 168). You also have Liberty Island and Universe Strip Club. Other good places to check are Genie Magic KTV but it is far in Rizal municipality and East Asia KTV in Roxas. Some other names mentioned on internet are Studio 69 and Apeira but I cannot confirm if there are still open or not.

Popular Mansion is a bar and nightclub located on Jalan Gatot Subroto, not far from Dragonfly Club. It is owned by the company who published Popular Magazine, a male magazine similar to FHM.

In case you don't know, many models in such magazines in Indonesia are very sweet and friendly, yet borderline prostitutes. If you flash your money around them, you have a big chance of getting a date and probably more. The cost is very high though as you will compete with some Indonesians loaded with cash and who are ready to spend hundreds of millions to satisfy their egos. They are actually mostly looking for rich boyfriends/husbands/sugar daddies, not one-night stands.

Popular Mansion is usually not really happening except when they have special events with Popular girls. During those events, you can be introduced to the girls you like if you ask one of the waiters or the manager. Show you have money and you're about 80% sure to get a number (if she came alone and if she is single).

If you visit during a normal day, most likely you will see just a few groups of people but not more.

They also serve your usual Western-Indonesian popular dishes like pasta, nasi goreng, sandwiches, fish and chips, cordon bleu, etc. Average taste but cheap prices. They are open for lunch and dinner. Unless you stay nearby, I don't really see any reasons to go to Popular Mansion for eating.

Overall: I think you should check their schedule on their facebook or instagram page below. If you see a special event with dancers or fashion show, you can give it a try, otherwise it's best to avoid. Another reason to visit is that they have rather cheap prices, especially if you take 2 or 3 bottles. Please see the prices on their website below.

Executive Club (EC) Karaoke - Semarang

EC (Executive Club) is a chain of karaoke from the Varuna Group with locations in Semarang, Yogyakarta, Bali (Denpasar), Pekalongan and Cilacap.

In each of these cities, it is considered high-end with some of the prettiest LCs (Lady Companions) in town.

I visited the branch in Semarang, which is a bit hard to find on the last floor of Java Mall. You have to access it from the parking area (no lift at night).
You have a small lounge with live music or DJ and 11 karaoke rooms. The largest one, the Penthouse, can welcome up to 25 people. It is modern, clean and the staff is very pleasing. It is popular with Korean and Japanese guests. If you ask for a girl who is willing to be booked out (BO), you can take her home or to your hotel (with a generous tip of course, usually at least Rp500,000).

Live music is from Monday to Saturday between 10pm and 1am. On Saturday they sometimes have sexy dancers.

Opening Hours:
Every day from 7pm to 3am.

Ikan Bakar Mas Jammuz (Gesing Beach - Yogyakarta)

Ikan Bakar "Mas Jammuz" is a local seafood warung with an amazing view on Gesing Beach, one of the most beautiful white sand beaches in all Java (the first photo above was taken from the table we were eating at).

It is not easy to reach it though, you'll need to drive about 1h30min from Yogyakarta on a tiny, yet brand new road. The trip itself is fun and you'll go trough small villages, forests and various plantations. You can rent a motorbike in Yogyakarta for that (Rp60,000 for the day).

Mas Jammuz serves all kind of fishes (depending on what is available on that day), cooked Jimbaran style. It isn't fine dining but it is very cheap. We just paid Rp37,000 for two and we ate all this:
Overall:
If you are traveling in Yogyakarta and planning a day at the beach, avoid Parangtritis and do the effort of visiting Gesing beach instead. Once there, one of the best things you can do is eating a grilled fish in Mas Jammuz restaurant.

Semarang Nightlife: Best Bars, Clubs, Karaokes and Spas

$
0
0
Semarang is the 5th largest city in Indonesia with almost 2 millions inhabitants. Yet, its nightlife is not very developed apart from a few male-oriented bars, clubs, karaokes and spas.

As a friend from Semarang told me, the problem is that most young people fall into one of these categories:
- They are single but they still live with parents
- They are conservative or not interested with clubbing
- They married young and already have kids
- They left Semarang for Jakarta, Surabaya or Bali
- They cannot afford partying

In the end, the few people you see in clubs are Indo-Chinese men/local businessmen/government employees (all of them with their escorts/LCs), some Indonesians on business trips or traveling, very few expats and occasionally, students.

This does not mean that you cannot have fun, especially on weekends as you still have a few good venues for party. Foreigners are very rare so you can expect to be treated like royalty.

In this small guide I will give you a few tips to make sure you enjoy the best of Semarang nightlife.

Girl-Friendly Hotels near the Nightclubs:
Hotels are cheap in Semarang. Even the best one in the city, the Crowne Plaza is around 60$-70$ a night.

I recommend you to book one of these hotels because they are close from the tourist attractions and near the best nightclubs. They are also girl-friendly and they are used to welcoming foreigners.

Expensive:
Crown Plaza Semarang: This is my most recommend hotel as it is within one of the best malls in Semarang (Paragon Mall).
Novotel Semarang: Second most recommended, with a live music bar inside (and some prostitutes as well)

The best nightclub in Semarang, Babyface (and Relique Spa) is not in the city center but near the airport. The only decent hotel nearby is Fovere.

Meeting Girls in Semarang
Meeting normal girls in nightclubs in Semarang is not a great idea. Very few single girls are out partying: They are generally accompanying their boyfriends or some guys paying for their drinks.

You can assume that 80% of girls who are alone in a nightclub are working there as lady companions or GROs (which does not mean they are prostitutes). Their job is to make you spend more money and she will get a commission based on how many drinks you buy. They will generally give their phone numbers quite easily, and if you are friendly enough it shouldn't be too difficult to get them to have a drink with you the next day. They are often fun to hang out with and good companions. They are usually expecting either a relationship, some kind of gifts, or just the excitement of being treated nice dinners/drinks. Just make sure the one you are talking to is single.

If you are not shy, meeting girls in Semarang during the day is not difficult, but it is likely that they will be quite conservative and unwilling to go further than having a cup of coffee.

As usual in small cities, your best bet is to use dating apps and website like Tinder, Badoo or Skout. I made a list here for your reference: Best Dating Apps in Indonesia.

Happening Bars and Lounges in Semarang
If you are looking for a relaxed venue to have a few drinks in Semarang, I would advise one of the bars/lounges/restaurants below. Most of them are located in the Southern hills, with good views on the city. Click on the link for full review:

The most modern bar in Semarang. Good crowd but a bit pricey.

Upmarket restaurant and lounge with a great view on Semarang.

The favourite hang-out spot for students and younger expats. Good choice of beers.

The most famous expat bar in Semarang. Old-style and relaxed.

This bar is great for cocktails. It is within the old town in a Dutch heritage building. Popular with tourists.

Best Nightclubs in Semarang
Nightclubs in Semarang always work with a similar concept: They are small lounges with live music at the beginning of the evening, and then a DJ afterwards. You rarely have a dancefloor, only people drinking and dancing around tables.

There are only 3 good ones in the city in my opinion:

The busiest nightclub in Semarang at the moment. It is always full on weekends and they have the most interesting events including sexy dancers, live bands and DJs. It is owned by the Varuna Group. Most customers are Indochinese.

The main issue with Babyface is that it is located a bit far from the city center, in the North. E-Plaza on the contrary is walking distance from any hotels on Simpang Lima. It is similar with Babyface but not as crowded. They have good bands every night and many pretty GROs.

Liquid Club is more down-to-earth and with a younger crowd, many of whom are students. If you are under 25 that's probably where you should go. They often have sexy dancers on weekends.

I also liked the nightclub X-Point but it is located in a dirty area and it has an underground feel that you may not feel comfortable with.

Prostitution in Semarang: Karaoke and Spas
There are plenty of traditional bordellos, "panti pijat', salons, karaokes and spas in Semarang. Actually, most of the nightlife in the city is prostitution-oriented: 90% of party-goers are male paying for sex or some kind of entertainment from girls.

The prices for "full service" in the luxury spas in Semarang is usually from Rp300,000 to Rp500,000. This is a tip you have to pay to the girl on top of the price of the room (between Rp250,000 and Rp350,000).

The best massage parlours plus plus in Semarang are Emporium, Relique, Live, Eleven, Home or Elysium. I'm not sure if the last two are still open.

For karaokes, you can check BabyfaceKyuKyu, EC Karaoke, Eleven, 7KTV, Royal, Virgo, LiveX-Point and V5. In those places, not all girls are willing to be taken to a hotel. You should ask for a girl who is willing to be booked out if that is your intention. The price is between Rp500,000 and Rp1,000,000 for the whole night.

More and more of the prostitution in Semarang happens online on twitter, facebook, instagram, wechat and badoo. Girls advertise their services for BO (booking out) long-term or short term openly. The accounts of many girls are managed by pimps who take care of the transport, payment and safety. If the pictures are too good to be true, then you can assume they are fake.

I was disappointed with Yogyakarta nightlife. As a city famous for attracting students and tourists, I was expecting a fun party atmosphere with busy bars and nightclubs.

On the contrary, Yogyakarta is quite conservative: Most girls wear the jilbab and you can see all over the city some aggressive banners against gays or Shia muslims. I've read also about some incidents against a feminist group just a few days ago. This gave me the impression to be in Saudi Arabia more than in "tolerant" Indonesia.

In spite of this, I still had fun but I had to try quite many venues before figuring out which one were crowded and which one were boring.

The objective of this guide is to save you some time and give you the best tips to enjoy Yogyakarta nightlife if you are a single traveler there. If new bars and clubs open, please mention them in the comments to help me keep this review up-to-date.

Girl-Friendly Hotels in Yogyakarta:
I guess you are not going to Yogyakarta for the nightlife only and you are also interested in visiting attractions like Borobudur, the beaches in the South (like Gesing), the Keraton, etc.

If you want to do all that, plus go to bars and clubs in the evening, the best place to stay in Yogyakarta is near Jalan Malioboro, the most famous street in the city. It is lively, especially at night, and it is also walking distance to the main train station.

If you are on a budget, an alternative is to find a guest house near Jalan Prawirotaman, about a kilometer south of Jalan Malioboro. The price range goes from 10$ to 50$ a night. Be careful with small, family-run hostels though as they may not be girl-friendly. To avoid any issues, it is better to book in larger, chain hotels such as the ones below:

Expensive:
Inna Garuda Malioboro
Melia Purosani

Those are chain hotels in Central Yogyakarta. They don't have as much charm as small properties but at least you won't be the center of attention.

Best Bars and Clubs in Yogyakarta:
There are not that many venues for partying in Yogyakarta. My favorite spots are listed below, starting with the most recommended.

Dress codes are generally not enforced. I saw people wearing flip-flop, short pants and t-shirt almost everywhere except in Bosche and Sugar.

The best days to go out are Wednesday, Friday and Saturday. You can check on the Facebook pages of the venues below for special events during the week (for instance Student Campus Nights).

During July and August, the bars in the tourist areas are more lively with Western tourists, particularly in the backpacking streets Jalan Sosrowijayan and at the corner of Jalan Parangtritis and Jalan Prawirotaman.

Busy beer garden with a young expat and Indonesian crowd. Owned by a mixed couple Indonesian and Belgian, it is relaxed, friendly and cheap. You can get a local beer for just Rp30,000. Nicely designed. Service can be clumsy.

It is in a residential neighborhood, 10 minutes away from Jalan Malioboro. Probably the best place to meet "normal" girls in Yogyakarta. They have DJs and live bands occasionally.

Address: Jalan Pakuningratan 34, Yogyakarta 55233

Liquid Bar and Kitchen (not to be confused with Liquid Next Generation reviewed below) is a large warehouse filled with picnic tables where people come as a group for beers/wine and snacks.

The area near the DJ can be considered a club, especially later in the night on weekends. They also have live music. Open until late (from 5pm to 5am), it's a fun place, often messy, where you'll probably find something you'll like. There is about 25% girls and I didn't see any foreigners.

Address: Jalan Magelang KM 4,5
Phone number: +62 274 589611

Taj Lounge
This bar and club had just opened when I visited. It is already a popular choice among expats above 30. Most of them seemed to know each other already.

It is a good place to meet people if you are living in the city. If you are a tourist you might get bored. Music changes every night from hip hop to EDM and techno. Ladies night on Wednesday with free shots for girls. Open every day from 7.30pm to 3am.

Address: Jalan Urip Sumoharjo No.103H
Phone number: +62 822 4277 6766

Bosche VVIP Jogja
Bosche VVIP is just in front of City Mall. If you have been to the one in Bali, you will notice it looks almost the same. There is a Rp70,000 entrance fee (free for ladies). You generally have a local live band or sexy dancers before midnight, and then a DJ.

Since the prices are higher than the average for Yogyakarta (small local beer is Rp50,000), it attracts an older crowd, mostly male. The sound system and the lighting are great. It is famous for its karaoke where pretty lady companions (LC) are available. Many girls but most of them are working there and they are only looking for money. From reports I've read, you can actually have sex inside some of the bigger karaoke rooms.

The staff is rock n' roll. Every night they do a dance together on stage:

Sugar KTV and Nightclub
Sugar is one of the most exclusive KTVs and nightclubs in Yogyakarta. It is popular with the Chinese community, in particular guys as you have lots of high-class prostitutes. It also has some normal girls but they are always with male friends or boyfriends.

It is within the hotel Indoluxe, about 15 minutes from the center. It's worth going there only if you are planning to book a table and open a bottle at least. If you come alone, the entrance fee is Rp50,000 but you won't have anywhere to stand or sit.

The nightclub is pretty happening with events every night: Sexy dancers, fashion show, DJ, live bands, etc.

Address: Jalan Palagan Tentara Pelajar No.106
Phone number: +62 274 8722 388

Terrace Café and Karaoke
Terrace is located in Jalan Raya Seturan, an interesting street with many cafes and restaurants that stay open until late. Terrace is the busiest of all. It is a small club on two floors with either live music, a DJ or sexy dancers on stage. It wasn't so crowded when I visited and most of the guests were guys. The entrance was Rp40,000, a large bintang costs Rp75,000. They play EDM, Hip Hop and Top 40 music.

Address: Jalan Raya Seturan No. 4
Phone number: +62 274 4332931

Liquid Next Generation
Liquid Next Generation is one of the oldest nightclubs in Yogyakarta. Opened in 2006, it has the same concept as Terrace and Bosche. You have a stage with live music or DJs, and most people watch the show from tables and sofas. It is still popular, especially for special events. It does not look as modern though and it has a more underground vibe (dark, noisy, smokey). I wouldn't be surprised if people took drugs inside. Entrance fee is Rp35,000. Open everyday from 10pm to 4am.

Address: Jalan Magelang KM 5,5
Phone number: +62 274 622 020

Oxen Free is a beer garden, popular with expats, foreign students and tourists. Smart and educated crowd. They have live traditional music (keroncong) every Tuesday and jazz every Wednesday. When they don't have live music, they put some easy going tunes like the ones you would hear on a Buddha Bar playlist.

The prices are cheap and the food is supposed to be decent (I didn't try it). Price for a large Bintang is Rp50k and for a main course (International or Indonesian) between Rp50,000 and Rp100,000.

Address: Jalan Sosrowijayan No.2
Website: Oxen Free Beer Garden

Lucifer
Lucifer is a small bar/café/restaurant in the backpacker street Jalan Sosrowijayan. They have live rock and reggae music, cheap food and a crowd made of mostly Indonesian men in their 20s. Some of the waitresses are pretty.

Address: Jalan Sosrowijayan no 71
Phone number: +62 274 554377

Easy Going Restaurant and Bar
This is one of the most famous backpacker hangout in Yogyakarta. There is nothing really special except that it is popular. If you are traveling alone it's a good spot to make new friends.

Address: Jalan Prawirotaman No.12
Phone number: +62 274 384092

Other Bars nearby:
At the corner of Jalan Prawirotaman and Jalan Parangtritis, you have a strip of cheap bars with live music such as Cuba Libre, Ruis Cafe, Beatles Pub, Banana Café and South Side Café.

Palms Karaoke and Executive Club
Palms is the only nightclub/bar in the list that I didn't visit. From what I understand, they have good EDM and electro DJs every night until 3am. Lots of pretty girls as well in their karaokes.

Address: Jalan Batikan No. 9
Phone number: 08170251111

Prostitution in Yogyakarta: Massage Parlours, Spas, Salons, Karaoke and Girlie Bars.
Karaoke
Some of the nightclubs mentioned above have lady companions or escorts such as Liquid, Bosche, Terrace, Palms and Sugar. Another good place for karaoke is EC Jogja inside Inna Malioboro Hotel.

These venues have lady companions / escorts / prostitutes that you can book out to your hotel for a fee ranging from Rp500,000 to Rp1,000,000. You must ask the GROs which girls are willing to do what when booking the room because many are only there for singing/drinking with you.
Spa and Massage Plus Plus
They are usually not located in the city center except for Elysium Spa. The others are about 15 minutes from Jalan Malioboro.

In general, you choose a girl from a photo or from a number (or ask advice to the GRO). The price of the room + massage is between Rp200,000 and Rp350,000. If you want more, you have to pay a tip to the girl from Rp100,000 for a handjob to Rp400,000 for full services (sex).

The most recommended massage parlours for foreigners are the following:

Graha Spa (Jalan Ring Road Utara RT11/RW18)

Red Cliff Spa and Lounge (Jalan Tasura No. 45)

Elysium Spa (Jalan Magelang)

Mansion Spa and Health Club (Jalan Kabupaten No. 888)

Amanda Spa (Jalan Kabupaten No. 96)

Salon Plus Plus and Panti Pijat (Brothels)
There are also many panti pijat and salons with sexual services, but they are in very "local" places. If you are interested to see, you can go to the street Jalan Palang (Salon Tiga Dara, Salon Amay) or Jalan Babarsari (Salon Cassanova). Prices are slightly lower compared to spas mentioned above (25% less). Some can be very cheap but they cater to low-class Indonesians (under 15$ for full service).

Online Prostitution is Booming in Indonesia

$
0
0
With the current crackdown on red light districts and massage parlours everywhere in the country, for instance in Kalijodo in Jakarta or Dolly in Surabaya, online prostitution has been booming in Indonesia.

Surprisingly, sexual services are not advertised through specific adult sites. Prostitutes, pimps and mafias use mainstream websites and apps like Facebook, Twitter, WeChat, BeeTalk, Instagram, Badoo or Tinder. If you are using any of these, you have probably noticed that there are more and more profiles of prostitutes, to the point that it can ruin the experience for "normal" users.

This is the case on WeChat. They have an interesting feature called "Look Around" that can be used to meet people near you. In Indonesia, it has been completely hijacked by organized online prostitution. As soon as you turn it on, you'll receive chat requests from various "spas" and "massage girls" offering to visit you in your room 24/7. You can barely see normal people anymore.

On the dating app Badoo, it has become very difficult to meet girls who are not looking for money, directly or indirectly. They rarely mention openly that they are prostitutes but they will often say in their profiles things like: "Butuh uang (need money)", "Tidak suka cowok pelit (I don't like stingy guy), "I like shopping", etc.
Typical "soft" prostitution profile on Badoo ("I like generous guys who can make me happy")
Some are more straight-forward and will write: "Open for BO (Booking Out) to your hotel for LT /ST (Long Time/Short Time).

In this case, it is likely that the person behind the profile is a pimp and not the actual girl. It's only after you agree to a transaction and pay a down payment (DP) that he will contact the girl, pick her up, and bring her to your place. In some cases, the girls have a hotel room or an apartment where they can meet customers. Kalibata City is famous for having many apartments used entirely for online prostitution.

On Facebook, Twitter or Instagram, prostitutes can easily be found using some specific hashtags such as #bokingcewek#wanitabayaran, #cewekbispak and many more. Those looking for girls in a specific location will add a city name, for instance: #bispaksurabaya (bispak means "bisa pakai" = "can be used"). For any of these keywords, hundreds of girls profiles will show up.

They manage their fan pages in a professional way, teasing their fans with pictures and exclusive videos, posting screenshots of clients bank transfers, giving information about their whereabout and their availability.
A girl post the proof of bank transfer from a client and informs she has 2 slots available
Some will also do packages and promotions, just like any real, well-organized massage parlour, spa or bordello. On Twitter, Riri Manja 28 does a phone sex promotion for April for instance:
Phone sex promotion from a girl on twitter
Prostitutes and their pimps rely also on Whatsapp, Line and BlackBerry Messenger to communicate with clients and set up meeting locations and time.

Recently, some bigger groups have emerged, managing several girls at once. For instance, the Silvi Group that operates on instagram has a network of girls in Jakarta, Medan, Surabaya and Palembang. Go Crot operates on twitter, managing dozens of girls in Surabaya.
Advertising for Silvi Group on Instagram
The Police has made very few arrests so far. It is probably impossible for them to stop this trend as both the demand and offer for prostitution is so high in Indonesia.

Considering this though, I wonder if it is a smart move for the Government to go ahead with its plan to close down all red-light districts by 2019. We see that the sex trade will just move from the streets to the virtual world.

Are the girls safer online? Wouldn't it better, as Ahok suggested, to legalize prostitution and to organize it in dedicated spaces? This could make the job easier for the Government and NGOs to protect sex workers from abuse/violence and to give them counseling and regular medical check-ups.

Gonzo's Tex Mex Restaurant (Jakarta)

$

Gonzo's is a brand-new restaurant serving Mexican, Texan and Tex-Mex specialties. Its first location is in Lotte Mall Kuningan, slightly hidden behind Ranch Market. It doubles up as the first Margarita bar in Jakarta.

The theme is Mexican but I don't think it was the objective of the owners to recreate Mexico in Jakarta. It is colorful and friendly, yet simple. Gonzo's caters to a mall crowd who needs a fun place for meeting/hanging out. They serve mostly popular dishes like Burritos, Fajitas, Steaks, Tacos, Quesadillas, etc, not fine dining Mexican food (see Full Menu).

As such, they are reasonably-priced, especially if you benefit from one of their promotions (Free Tacos on Monday, Free Burritos on Wednesdays -> see their facebook). Actually, when we visited we were expecting small portions as the prices weren't that high. We ended up with so much food I had to call a friend to help us finish.
That's what you get for less than Rp200,000 in Gonzo's!
We tried the burritos, tacos, quesadillas and enchiladas. The taste was great, just as good as any of the most famous Mexican restaurants in Jakarta. I regret we didn't go for one of their grilled meat "Texas favorites" though. I also recommend you their Margaritas, you get 1 free for each you buy from 5pm to 8pm.

Gonzo's is right next to the new bar/club Revolution too so it's a good place to go to for pre-party snacks and drinks.

How I Became Fat in Indonesia

$
0
0
One thing I didn't expect would happen in Indonesia was that I would get fat.

I come from France, a country where we use sugar, syrup, butter, cream, sauces or oil in almost every single dish. And yet, in Paris my weight was a steady 70 kilograms.

While in Indonesia, I reached almost 90 kilos within a year, even though I was eating less. I tried to understand how it could happen, and I came up with a few possible explanations. Here is the 6-step story of how I became fat in Indonesia:

Step 1: Eating Indonesian Food All The Time
I love Indonesian food and I think it is one of the most underrated cuisines in the world. Needless to say, when I'm in Indonesia, I eat Indonesian food for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

The problem is that most dishes are extremely fat. Ingredients are rarely boiled in water, they are fried, sautéed, stir-fried or cooked in coconut milk, for instance Beef Rendang or Gulai.

Coconut milk has a 20% fat content, the equivalent of light cream. This percentage raises further as the water evaporates during cooking. In the end, a meal like Nasi Padang can easily reach 1000 kcal and 80 grams of fat (see here). That's the equivalent of a Double Whopper with Cheese from Burger King AND a can of Coca-Cola. Even a simple Nasi Goreng (without fried chicken) has 740 calories (see here)!

Some Indonesian dishes like Gado-Gado or Tempeh are considered more healthy. Yet if you look closely, they aren't.

Gado-Gado is a salad with boiled vegetables, rice and ... peanut sauce, which is made with fried peanuts, sugar and coconut milk. A typical serving of the sauce (100 grams) will have 300kcal and 25 grams of fat (see: Is Peanut Sauce Healthy?). So unless you eat it with almost no sauce, Gado Gado will also make you fat.

Tempeh is a healthy food too, but it is usually served deep-fried. If you want a fruit salad, you can also expect it will come with copious amounts of sugar and sauce.

Step 2: Doing My Groceries in Convenience Stores
When you live in Jakarta, bad food habits are easy to catch. The Government is obsessed with alcohol, but it seems unaware of the risks of high fat and high sugar diets.

Enter a convenience store in Indonesia and all you see are candies, sodas, juices, chips, cookies, ice-creams (and cigarettes). In a Circle K in Jakarta, I counted only a handful of products that didn't have added sugar or fat: Water, eggs, rice, milk, pasta, flour and oatmeal. All the rest was industrial, heavy-processed food.

For comparison purposes, this is what the equivalent of a 7-Eleven or Circle K looks like in France:
You'll find fruits, vegetables, salads, bread, dairy products, pasta, sauces, condiments, eggs, etc. Actual, nutritious food. The chips, candies and biscuits section will take about half a shelf each. Oh, and yes you can buy alcohol and wine.

Even with the best intentions in the world, it is much more difficult to eat well in Indonesia when healthy food is harder to find.

Step 3: Blending in the Snack Culture
Indonesians have a great snack culture: They love to gather, discuss, smoke and try one of the hundreds of snacks available in the country. They even have a word for that: "nongkrong" (≈ hangout).
If you have Indonesian colleagues, you'll know that people here never stop eating, especially in the office. In particular, whenever someone comes back from holiday, you can be sure she/he will bring a few of the local snacks from there. It's a fun tradition, but again more fat and more calories: 104 grams of "Krupuk" (Prawn Crackers) contain over 600 kilocalories. And trust me it does not take long for me to eat that. Indonesian "Gorengan" (Fritters) are even worse, reaching over 220 kcal each (see here).
Typical snack shop in indonesia
Step 4: Visiting Bars and Clubs as a Main Activity
Honestly, there aren't many things to do in Jakarta at night apart from hanging out with other people in restaurants, lounges, bars or clubs. It's great for your social life, but again, it means more snacks, more alcohol and more sugary drinks. A typical week means at least 2 after-work drinking session, and a night out.

Technically, I could order just sparkling water each time, but I don't. I drink juices, beers, shots, spirits with mixers, etc. And when the party end, I have no better idea than having a burger or a porridge.

Step 5: Becoming Lazy
I've never really been into sports, but when you live in Paris, you walk several kilometers easily because the city has proper sidewalks and the weather is pleasant.

In Jakarta I barely walk 200 meters every day. In the morning, I go to the elevator, get a taxi in the lobby that takes me directly to the lobby of my office, sit down all day, then go back home in the evening again with a taxi.

Walking can help you burn a lot of calories actually. According to this paper, a 70kg man will burn around 5kcal every minute he walks, or 300kcal an hour. So by constantly using taxis, ojeks, lifts and escalators, I should have compensated by eating less. Of course I didn't.

Step 6: Dating an Indonesian Girl
One of the reasons I didn't mind being fatter in Indonesia was that my girlfriend would keep telling me that I looked better with some extra kilos. This was not only coming from her, but from all my Indonesian colleagues and friends.

The more weight I would gain, the more I would hear: "You look good Thibaud!".

When I came back from a 2-week holiday in France where I had lost a few kilos, people asked me: "Are you ok? What happened to you?.

Many Indonesians consider that being too skinny is a sign of poverty or malnutrition. A chubby person looks happy, rich and healthy. It does not help motivating you to be more careful with your diet.

Conclusion: Why Aren't Indonesians Getting Fat?
Considering what they eat, one could be surprised there aren't more fat people in Indonesia. In the street, most Indonesians are thin, especially those from the working class.

It is not difficult to understand why. Poorer people don't take the taxi, they walk. Poorer people don't sit all day behind a desk, they do hard job and chores. Poorer people also eat and drink less, particularly alcohol, fast food, candies, cakes, etc.

Among the middle class though, I've noticed there are more and more people who are overweight, especially among the middle class. According to the Indonesian Ministry of Health, the number of people who are overweight in the country has grown from 12 percent in 2007 to 21 percent in 2010. That's a massive 9 points in only 3 years!

So the truth is: Indonesians are getting fat too, just like I did.

Savanna Rooftop Bar and Restaurant (Kelapa Gading)

Savanna is a brand new rooftop bar and restaurant that opened in Kelapa Gading in March 2016. It is one of the nicest venues in the area to have a drink.

It seems one of the owners is Dada Hartoto Hardikusumo, an heir to the shipping company Andhika Lines. She was the Chef of Moya's Spanish Restaurant and she was also involved in other Spanish venues (Gusto in Epicentrum and Que Rico Hamburguesa in Kemang).

They have regular events such as live music and DJs. Friday night is Rn'B, otherwise it's more house and EDM. They also have stand up comedians on Saturday.

Nha Trang Nightlife (Vietnam)

$

If you are into beach bars, cheap drinks and hooking-up with drunk tourists, you might find that Nha Trang nightlife is the best in Vietnam.

I spent about a week there on holiday, during low season, and that gave me plenty of time to party in every single bar and nightclub in town.

The best thing about Nha Trang is that compared to other cities in Vietnam like Saigon or Hanoi, the rules are more relaxed. Venues stay open late, dress codes are rarely enforced, and it's more easy to find girl-friendly hotels. Prices are also very cheap, especially during low season. With a $50 budget, you should have enough to book at least a 3-star hotel, eat in nice beachfront restaurants and drink plenty at night.

The drawback of Nha Trang, as you've probably read elsewhere, is the huge proportion of Russian, Chinese and Vietnamese tourists compared to other nationalities. I really don't have anything against them, but I noticed that they tend to stay together, maybe because of the language or culture, and rarely mix. As a result, visiting a nightclub in Nha Trang can become quite a social experiment. You'll look at other people party but you won't always feel part of the action. Of course it depends where you go.

The objective of this review is to give you the best advice on where to go for nightlife in Nha Trang if you are like me, a single guy, Westerner, in his 30s.

Hotels in Nha Trang Near the Nightlife
Nha Trang is a medium-sized city with almost 400,000 inhabitants. Most of the tourists are logically staying near the beach front.

The area with an active nightlife is limited to the city center. If you want to be walking distance from nightclubs AND the beach, I recommend you to book one of the following hotels:

High-End:
If you book in advance, you can get a 5-star hotel in Nha Trang for 100$-150$. The best one is probably the brand new Intercontinental Nha Trang, from which you can walk to most nightclubs in Nha Trang (Zima Nightclub and Havana Club are across the street). There is also the stylish RuNam Bistro on the ground level, perfect for a date.

Sheraton Nha Trang is just next to it, but it is more expensive and older. It has a quiet rooftop lounge called Altitude.

The nearby Best Western Premier Havana is another excellent choice. It has one of the most amazing nightlife venues in Nha Trang, the Skylight 360° Rooftop Bar.

Novotel Nha Trang is great 4-star beach front property, usually less expensive (100$ for the cheapest room).

Mid-Range:
Liberty Central Nha Trang is just 100m from the beach and close from the busiest area for cheap bars and restaurants. It is also walking distance from the Sailing Club and Louisiane Brewhouse, the two nicest beach clubs in central Nha Trang.

Budget
There are hundreds of small guest houses and backpacker hostels in Nha Trang. To be near the nightlife and the beach, you can check any property located near Booze Cruise Bar or Why Not Bar.

Girl Friendly Hotels / Sex Hotels
The hotels above may not be girl-friendly. It is better to ask a receptionist whether it is ok for you to bring your "girlfriend" to your room.

If you want certainty, you can book a room in one of the two hotels below. Both have a massage parlours where sexual services are provided so you can expect them to be open-minded regarding who you stay with.

Quoc Te Hotel and Sauna is the most famous. Rooms are decent for about 20-40 dollars per night. It is also central, just 5 minutes away from the beach by foot and 10 minutes from good bars.

Hoa Dao Hotel, Karaoke and Spa is a bit further from the action but cheaper. You can get a room for less than 20$.

Best Bars and Nightclubs in Nha Trang
Most of the best bars and nightclubs in Nha Trang are within a few hundred meters from each other, on Tran Phu Street. It's very easy to do a pub crawl just by walking. Here are my recommended nightlife spots in Nha Trang:

Sailing Club
Sailing Club is one of the most famous F&B venues in Nha Trang, day or night. It is the equivalent of Potato Head in Bali. During the day, it is your typical beach club, not luxury but definitely upmarket. You can get a beach cabana/lounger without any minimum spending. Prices are higher than elsewhere: Cocktails cost between VND160,000 and VND200,000 and local beer VND70,000. For the food (curries, pizza, pasta, burgers, wraps, salads, sandwiches), you'll spend on average VND250,000 for a main course. The crowd is really mixed. You have families, couples, young people, etc. Most are Russian and Vietnamese.

In the evening, it become a hot party spot with live music or DJ. You'll see more backpackers then. Saturday nights are the best with their weekly beach party. Other days can be quiet and you'll only see a few people dancing. It's a good place to meet girls but beware as there are also some freelance prostitutes.

Louisiane Brewhouse is a similar venue but more quiet and relaxed. Both belong to the same group.

Address: 72-74 Tran Phu Street
Phone number: +84 58 3524 628
Open everyday from 10am to 2am

Havana Club
Vietnamese club, similar to the kind you would find in Saigon. Loud dance music, people getting drunk until they pass out. They have events like sexy dancers and singers. If you live in Saigon, it's not really worth visiting as there is nothing new here. Dress code: Avoid shorts and flip-flops. They have some sort of sexy lady companions.

Address: 38 Tran Phu Street (in front of Best Western Premier Havana)
Phone number: 093 585 54 42

Zima Club
While Havana is the best club for Vietnamese, Zima is the favourite for Russians. Guys must pay a cover charge of VND50,000 with one free drink. Many Russians girls are alone but they aren't the prettiest. The main dance floor is quite small and surrounded by tables/sofas. Second floor is more private. The music is house music from the 90s and 2000s with some Russian EDM tracks. Quite loud. Its not that sophisticated but it has a pleasant holiday feel. They have sexy Russian gogo dancers.

Address: 26 Tran Phu Street (E-Land)
Phone number: 0126 763 6888
Website: www.zimaclub.com
Facebook: Zima Nha Trang
Open every day from 8pm to 3am

Pool Pub - PP
Pool Pub is a beer garden/bar near the beach front, 100 meters before the Best Western Premier Havana. It's packed starting 9pm with a crowd mostly Vietnamese. They play loud house music that can be heard from the street. People cannot really talk to each other so they just smile all the time and keep cheering. Funny! They have some sexy waitresses and bikini hostesses.

If you like Pool Pub, you can also check UlikeILike and Rocky Beer Clubs. All are noisy venue with cheap beer and an all-Vietnamese crowd.

Address: 40 Tran Phu Street
Phone number: 090 511 63 56
Facebook: Pool Pub NT
Open everyday from 5pm to 2am

Lodge Club
Your typical Vietnamese nightclub. Guys drinking directly from the bottles with hot Vietnamese chicks who look 16. They have some special "hostesses".

Address: 42 Tran Phu
Phone number: 090 195 29 99
Facebook: Lodge Club Nha Trang

Yasaka 008 Night Club
Located in Yasaka Saigon Resort and Spa, this is another Vietnamese-style nightclub. It's very loud with aggressive lighting. It's supposed to be luxurious but feels a bit dodgy. Sexy dancers.

Address: 8 Tran Phu Street
Phone number: +84 58 382 0090
Open every day from 9pm to 3am

Best Rooftop Bars in Nha Trang
With several high-rise building, Nha Trang has some great rooftop bars. They are generally crowded from sunset until 10pm. They are not party places unless there is a specific events. It's best to visit them in the late afternoon when there is still day light as the view can be disappointing at night.

Skylight 360° Sky Deck & Rooftop Beach Club
One of the most popular spots in Nha Trang, Skylight is well-worth visiting at least once. You have a VND100,000 entrance fee for the beach club (VND150,000 on weekends) that comes with a free drink.

They have a swimming pool but the lounge chairs around it are often taken. It's more pricey than average so expect to pay VND150,000-200,000 for cocktails. There is a DJ playing lounge/chill out tunes on normal days. Weekends are more happening, you can check for events on their facebook page.

Address: 38 Tran Phu Street
Phone number: 058 3528 988

Open everyday from 8am to 2pm and from 4.30pm to midnight

The Rooftop Bar @ Ha Van Hotel
On the 5th floor of the Han Van Hotel, the Rooftop Bar is quite unique in Nha Trang. It is managed by a multicultural team: Nicolas, the Canadian owner, Arnaud, Annie and the Chef Marc-André. Since it opened in 2007, it has become the best expat bar in the city. You'll also find many backpackers and some locals.

It is almost always busy, and particularly on Friday during their ladies night (1 free cocktail for girls from 9pm to 12pm). The food is excellent, burgers are a must-try. There is also a Vietnamese restaurant downstairs (same owner) called Yen's.

The ambiance at night is bit psychedelic: It is dark, with predominantly red lights and electronic music. It reminded me of beach bars in Koh Phangan or Goa.

It is a good spot for meeting normal girls. Some Vietnamese girls seemed to be looking for boyfriends. Cheap if you go during happy hours from 5p to 9pm = Buy 1 Get 1 Free. 10 shots for VND500,000. Shisha available.

Open daily from 5pm to 2am
Phone number: +84 58 3525 454
Ha Van Hotel, 3/2 Tran Quang Khai Street
Facebook: Rooftop Bar

Above Sky Bar
Above is the newest rooftop bar in Nha Trang. It opened in December 2015 on top of Liberty Central Hotel. If you are familiar with Saigon nightlife, you will notice the bar look very similar to Chill Sky Bar. The concept is also almost the same: Lounge music during the day, DJ later in the evening.

Ladies night on Wednesday: Girls get free Mojitos from 9pm to 11pm.

Address: 7-9 Biệt Thự
Phone number: 058 3529 555
Facebook: Above Liberty Central
Everyday from 5pm to 1am

Altitude Bar
On the 27th floor of the Sheraton Nha Trang, the design of Altitude suffers from the comparison with Skylight. It is expensive (5$ a beer) but you can visit it from 5pm to 7pm daily to enjoy their happy hours (buy 1 get 1 free). Ladies night on Saturday will get girls free signature cocktails from 8pm to 9pm. Live Music Wednesday and Thursday.

26-28 Tran Phu Street
Phone number: 058 3880 000
Facebook: Altitude Bar
Open from Tuesday to Sunday from 5pm to 11pm (closed on Monday)

Lunar Lounge
Lunar Lounge is a recently renovated rooftop bar and restaurant in Nha Trang Center building. It is Canadian/Vietnamese owned. They have a beautiful lagoon-shaped pool, live music (English and Vietnamese songs) and an International menu ($8-$12 for a main course). Modern design. Not so crowded.

Open everyday from 7am to 1am

Backpacker / Cheap Bars in Nha Trang
Nha Trang is such a cheap destination that it attracts many backpackers doing their Southeast Asia tour. As usual, they gather in just a few streets, namely Nguyễn Thiện Thuật and Tran Quang Khai.
90% of the backpacker bars in Nha Trang are within the green area

There are at least 20 bars there, with little to differentiate one from another. My advice would be to just walk around and pick the most crowded. Apart from the ones I'm reviewing below, you can have a look at Patrick (wine bar - French food - live music), Far East Rock Bar (they have 2 - cheap beer), Hole in The Wall (English-owned pub with bar girls), Crazy Kim (sports bar), La Mancha (salsa - Spanish food), Pankoff (German beer), After the Beach (empty but pretty Russian hostesses) and Connection (good location at the angle of the street).

Why Not Bar
Why Not Bar is one of those shitty places that still get to exist due to the lack of alternatives. You'll hear terrible stuff about it, yet it is the most busy bar in the city past 1am.

There are many reports about customers being stolen valuables or scammed. If you plan on getting drunk there, just don't bring too much cash with you and no passport, no papers, and no phone. The place is so cheap that you can probably drink all-night for less than $10. Hard drinks (VND15,000 for a rum coke) are most likely done using fake alcohol. It's better to stick to beers (VND10,000 for a local beer).

Why Not Bar can be a lot of fun though, and a good place to meet other tourists, particularly Western girls. Local prostitutes are lurking around too. The music is an Itunes playlist with any song that was in the Top 40 in the past 20 years.

Address: 24 Tran Quang Khai
Phone number: +84 58 3522 652
Facebook: Why Not Bar
Open everyday from 6am until 3am

Booze Cruise Sports Bar
A bit more expensive compared to other places nearby, the American-owned Booze Cruise is nonetheless one of the busiest bars on the street. Many regulars among the customers, mostly guys in their 30s and 40s. The crowd of Booze is the pretty much the opposite of the crowd of Roofop Bar in Ha Van Hotel.

They serve pub fare from breakfast to dinner. You can play pool and table football.

Address: 110 Nguyen Thien Thuat
Phone number: +84 90 571 9519
Facebook: Booze Cruise Sports Bar
Open everyday from 7am to 3am

If you like the testosterone atmosphere of Booze Cruise, you may also want to try Cheers Bar (good food and live sport). It gets quite crowded when there is a big AFL game on. The owner is Australian.

Quan 69 Bach Dang
This is the place to go if you want to tell your friends that you literally got drunk for a buck. 2 liters of local beer will cost you less than VND20,000. They also serve some good Vietnamese food (duck soup).

Many older expats seem to be spending most of their days over there.

Prostitution in Nha Trang: Massage Parlours, Spas and Karaokes

Spas and Massage Parlours Plus Plus
Therapists in Hoa Da Massage Parlour
Like all major Vietnamese cities, Nha Trang has its fair share of massage parlours and spas. The best ones have a similar pricing: Around VND300,000 for the "normal" treatment, and then if you want more you must add a tip to the girl (VND300,000 for handjob, VND500,000 for full sex).

The most famous "naughty" massage parlour in Nha Trang is Hoa Da. It's a chain with 4 locations in the city. From the information I could get, only handjobs are available. You can get two girls at once if you ask.

Hoa Da 1
10/1 Lý Tự Trọng Street
Phone number: 0583.826.877

Hoa Da 2
115A Hoàng Văn Thụ Street
Phone number: 0583.816.028

Hoa Da 3
39 Mê Linh Street (a bit far from center)
Phone number: 058.35.12.303

Hoa Da 4
14 A Trần Văn Ơn Street

Phone number: 0583.561.277

You can check the prices and photos of the room on their website: Hoa Da Massage Plus Nha Trang. The same group also owns Hoa Dao Hotel, Karaoke and Spa which is a good option if you are looking for a girl-friendly hotel with massage parlour.

Another massage parlour plus plus located inside a hotel is Quoc Te. Full service is available there. They have a sauna and steambath. Prices are higher than elsewhere. If you are on a budget, you can go to the "Seagull" hotel instead: Hai Au Hotel.

Karaokes
Nha Trang is filled with karaokes. They range from the cheap places in local neighborhood to upmarket venues on the beach.

If you want to find one with pretty lady companions and hostesses, you can go to Four Seasons Karaoke in E-Land (in front of Best Western Premier Havana) or in Yasaka 008 in Yasaka Saigon Resort and Spa.

25 Best Massage Parlours and Spas in Saigon

$
0
0
Saigon/Ho Chi Minh City is full of naughty massage parlours and spas where you can get "extra service" (also referred to as "happy ending", "rug and tug", "plus plus", or simply by what they are, handjobs).

I enjoyed Saigon nightlife several months when I was living there, but I had actually been to one of these massage parlours/spas. Nevertheless, as I am a sucker for web traffic, I'm listing here all the places that provide such services in Saigon. Most of the information below comes from tips from friends who are expats in Saigon, completed with research on internet forums and blogs.

Many of the spas are located inside hotels. If you are looking for a girl-friendly hotel in Saigon, it is a good idea to book one of them. I included a direct link to Agoda to help you. I make a small commission on every booking so if you like this review and value the hours I spent writing it, please book your hotel using one of the links!

Spa Etiquette in Saigon

Ticket and Tipping
Apart from a few local places, there are no "full service" massage parlours in Saigon. This means that on top of paying for the room (entrance ticket), you must always negotiate a tip with the girl depending on what you want. In most of the venues listed, only a HJ (handjob) is allowed, but if BJ (blowjob), DATY (cunnilingus), BJ (full sex) are available I will mention it.

The good etiquette is to give a tip at least equal to the price of your room. I read many comments about guys who tip low not to "ruin the market". But if you have enough money to ruin the market, why would you care? There is no secret that the bigger the tip, the bigger the motivation of the masseuse.

Rooms
The kind of room you book has an influence on the type of service you will receive:
Standard room means a normal massage with potentially more depending on the tip you give.
Vip room means that you will get a bathtub or a jacuzzi. As a result, you will normally be bathed naked by the therapist. The therapist will keep her clothes on. Then you get a normal massage + whatever you negotiate to get.
Super VIP means you will have two girls massaging you for 2 hours in a room with jacuzzi/bathtub. Again, the girls will not be nude, only you.

Choosing Your Masseuse
There are no fishbowl or aquarium in Vietnam. Each girl has a number that you can request. Many Vietnamese share the "good" numbers on private forums or private Facebook groups. Foreigners don't have as much luxury and they will often get a random girl.

To increase your chances of being with a pretty girl, you can make special requests to the mamasan or GRO (Guest Relation Officer). If you don't like the girl who is brought to you, you can always ask for another one too.

Foreigners and Vietnamese
Most massage parlours where foreigners go to are located in District 1. They are pricier but you will probably feel more comfortable in such places. If you feel adventurous, the best ones are actually in District 3, District 5 and District 10. In those places, it is likely that girls will ask you for a bigger tip because you are a foreigner. Expect to pay 30%-50% more.

The area known as "Little Tokyo" in Le Thanh Ton Street and Ngô Văn Năm street is even more pricey. Most guests are Japanese and Korean who will pay up to 5 times the normal rates.

Some brothels are forbidden to Vietnamese and you will be asked to show your passport to get in. Apparently this is to avoid troubles with the police.

Tip from VND200,000 to VND300,000. Some girls will take off their bras or even go full nude for an additional VND200,000.

Bui Vien Spa Scam
In District 1 (and particularly in Bui Vien or near Hai Bai Trung), some massage parlours run a well-known scam: A staff opens your locker while you're being treated and takes some of your money. Avoid places where sexy girls are aggressively trying to pull customers away from the street with the promise of a "cheap massage".

If you are in Bui Vien and need an honest massage parlour, you can go to Kaka Spa (138 Bui Vien). The room starts at VND180,000 and the tip is between VND250,000 and VND400,000.

Girlie Bars 13, 35, 37, 49, 51, 91 and Smiley Bar
Around Hai Bai Trung street, you have several hostess bars with a naughty side. They don't have a name, only a number. Some have been shut down by the police but I know that 91 (on 91, Hai Bai Trung) and Smiley are still open. Smiley is the nicest one and it is easy to spot with its huge yellow smiley above the entrance.

On the first floor is a normal hostess bar: You buy a drink at an inflated price and a girl will come sit next to you, trying to get you to buy her ladies drinks. At one point, they will offer to play a game of pool. If you win, you see her naked. If you lose, you give her VND500,000. They will generally offer to do a blowjob as well whoever wins.

Few of these girls are pretty. They will also tend to be pushy for more and more tips.

"Clean" Beauty Salons
If you walked near Benh Thanh Market, you may have noticed some beauty salons with very pretty girls inside, usually wearing skirts and high heels. Those places do not provide anything more than beauty treatments, but many guys enjoy being aroused there. You can also easily get a phone number.

The famous one is Le Duyen 4 (72 Trương Định).

"Naughty" Beauty Salons
If you go further away from the city center, you can find what Vietnamese call "Hot Tocs Goi Dau" or "HTGD" (hairdressers) which are quite unique in Saigon's prostitution scene. Most people visit them for blowjobs.
The most famous one among foreigners is Benny or Ben Ny (110 Điện Biên Phủ, 17, Bình Thạnh) because it is relatively clean and the girls are skilled. The entrance fee is VND200,000 and the tip between VND200,000 and VND300,000.

An alternative is to go to Nguyen Phi Khanh street (often called NPK), on the northern end of District 1. You have 4 "Hot Tocs' in which you can ask for 2 girls if you pay double entrance and two tips.  Prices are similar to Ben Ny. Full sex is also available for a tip of VND1,000,000.

Palembang Nightlife: 7 Best Nightclubs

$

Palembang is the second largest city in Sumatra after Medan. It does not receive a lot of foreign visitors apart from Malaysians and Singaporeans.

As with most provincial towns in Indonesia, you'll remark the following features when partying in Palembang:
- Most clubbers are males who either take drugs, get hammered drunk or look for paid sex
- The music program management consist of selecting pretty singers or pretty DJs, regardless of their skills
- The concept of a dance floor is non-existent. Instead, you have high tables that are available if you take at least a bottle (or less when the club isn't crowded)
- If you are hoping to meet a girl in a Palembang club, your chances are slim as most girls are either working (as GROs/LCs) or the girlfriends of the other guys
- Alcohol is always expensive, even in lower-end places. If you go somewhere with abnormally cheap alcohol, you're probably drinking methanol.
- The police does occasional "razzias" on clubs when they need some cash

To meet normal girls in Palembang, day-time action is much better, in particular though dating apps. Check Indonesian Online Dating Apps and Websites for more information.

Some Hotels Recommendation:
I found the nightclubs to be quite far from each other. For this reason, I strongly recommend you to book a hotel in the city center.

The best ones in terms of quality of service and location (near the nightlife/bars/clubs) are the following:

Budget Hotels (under $30): Amaris PalembangRed Planet PalembangFavehotel Palembang
Expensive Hotels ($50-$80): Aston Hotel and Conference CenterNovotel PalembangThe Arista Hotel

NB: I get a commission if you make a booking using one of these links (the price is the same for you).

Best Nightclubs in Palembang:

If you are traveling or working in Palembang, here are my nightclubs recommendations (honestly, only the first 4 are suitable for most people):

CenterStage
Center Stage is one of the most famous and expensive nightclubs on the Palembang nightlife scene. It is rather simple: You have a main large room with an elevated podium for the DJ and a large screen behind it.

The music is progressive house and EDM. The kind you want to hear if you are drunk or high. They have regular sexy dancers, but no striptease. They love to have pretty female DJs. You usually have a band playing at the beginning of the evening.

It is part of Novotel Palembang and you'll also find an executive karaoke inside named Papillon. Open from Wednesday to Saturday Night starting 9pm until 3am. Free for ladies. Rp100,000 FDC for men.

Address: Jalan R. Sukamto No.8A, Novotel Palembang
Phone number: 0711-369777
Blackberry: 276ECD1D

Twitter: CSNovotel

Neo PC (Princess Club, Hotel Princess)
This is the best nightclub in Palembang in my opinion. It is located on the 5th floor of the Princess Hotel and it was just renovated in 2015. Contrary to CenterStage, it attracts more young, normal people and particularly students. The best day to visit is on Thursday night for their Campus Night.

They have a DJ every night from 7pm to 2am (4am on weekends) and a live band playing famous songs from Monday to Friday. Many special events (check their facebook or instagram below). Sexy dancers (called Devious Angels). Entrance fee Rp75,000 to Rp100,000 on weekends only (1 free drink).

Address: Princess Hotel, 5th Floor, IBP District D2 No. 608, Palembang 30134

Mansion Executive Club
Mansion is a luxury night club, popular in the Indo-Chinese community. They have regular live bands followed by DJs. Sexy models/dancers between breaks. Most people go there with a group of friends before or after visiting their KTV. If you see hot girls in the club, they are either with one of those groups or lady companions. If they are LCs, the prettiest ones cost Rp600,000 for 3 hours (this does not include sex or anything, they just sing with you and make you drink more).

Address: Jalan Soekarno Hatta, Palembang, Ilir Barat I, Palembang
Phone number: +62 711 445557

Facebook: Mansion KTV and Club

S-Lounge in Selebriti Entertainment Center
Selebriti is famous for its karaoke. It's a clean place where you can go party with your colleagues after work. They also have a lounge/bar called S-Lounge with a different theme every night. The best one is the Campus night on Wednesday. Many pretty GROs. Live music and DJ. Sexy Dancers occasionally on weekends. Open every day from 10am to 2am.

Address: Jalan Veteran No.1243, Palembang, South Sumatra
Phone number: +62 711 323 333

Darma Agung Disco

Darma Agung is a "diskotik". If you are familiar with Indonesia nightlife, you may know that it is the term used for any drug-oriented nightclub. They play "funky house", fast-paced remixes of famous songs. They have a spa, needless to say the therapists are prostitutes. They were raided by the police several times but they must benefit from strong protection as they've been around for 20 years!

Address: Jalan Kol. H. Burlian No.45 KM7,5, Palembang
Phone number: +62 (0) 711 417 267
Facebook: DA (Darma Agung) Palembang

I saw something funny on the way out, I'm not sure if it is intentional or not. Instead of "In" and "Out", they wrote "In" and "Ex" on the doors. Inex is a well-known slang word meaning ectasy.

B'Nice Luxury Club and Karaoke
Very local place. Live band and prostitution. Friendly.

Address: Jalan Letkol Iskandar No. 1, Palembang
Phone number: +62 81958 782835

Venus Club and KTV
This is more a KTV than a club. You have a small lounge though open from 8pm to 2am with live music and lady companions.

Address: Jalan R. Sukamto No. 41, Palembang
Phone number: 07113 60014

10 Types of Indonesians Girls Who Never Date Foreigners (and How to Date Them)

$

0
If you think that as an expat in Indonesia you can be with any girls you want, you're wrong. Many of them would never date a foreigner for a whole variety of reasons.

As I love to do some generalizing and stereotyping, I've listed below 10 types of Indonesian girls who never date foreigners and what you can do to date them nonetheless.
Why would some girls refuse to date foreigners?
The Ones Who Don't Want To Have Sex Before Marriage
2014 study from the Pew Research Center found that 97% of Indonesians considered pre-marital sex to be morally unacceptable. On the other end of the spectrum, only 6% of French agreed with that statement.

The 2010 Greater Jakarta Transition to Adulthood Survey asked 3,006 Indonesians between 20 and 34 years old about their sexual activity. 5% of women had had pre-marital sex and 16% of men.

Let me rephrase: Only 5% of unmarried Indonesian women between 20 and 34 living in Greater Jakarta were sexually active in 2010.

Since the population in the area is so large, it still represents over 300,000 girls. The 6,700,000 remaining girls will most likely not date foreigners as few of them can accept a sexless relationship.

How to date them:
Abstinence.

The Ones Who Are More Attracted to Indonesian Men and Culture
Many Indonesian girls just prefer the Indonesian type of men. Not everyone is a fan of our hairy legs and big nose. They also feel more connected with someone with the same background, the same culture, the same values and the same objectives. They will like typical Indonesian traits better.

I also think that if you grow up watching local actors, singers or models, you will probably want a boyfriend who look like them and behave like them.

How to date them:
Shave, groom well and immerse yourself in Indonesian culture (i.e. watch sinetrons).

The Ones Who Think the Choice of Foreigners is Too Poor
I met a few girls who don't date Jakarta expats and I don't blame them. They find the choice of good guys available to be poor. As a friend explained me, most serious expats are married or in a relationship. Among the ones available for dating, very few actually want any kind of commitment.

She also feels the pool of expats is so small that it seems everyone knows each other.

How to date them:
Tell them you "just arrived" in Jakarta and criticize the behaviour of other expats.

The Ones Who Are Afraid of What Society Might Think
When an Indonesian girl is dating a foreigner, it's just as if she was wearing a big sign saying "I'm not a virgin anymore".

Indonesians are obsessed with virginity. To work in the Police or the Military, women must pass a virginity test. Inspector General Moechgiyarto justified it saying that girls who are not virgins might be "prostitutes". The equation non-virgin equates prostitutes is deeply entrenched in the Indonesian psyche unfortunately.

Many Indonesian girls who date foreigners complain that they are called names when walking the street with their foreign boyfriends, or that they must face derogatory comments. Considering this, I can really understand why some girls would avoid dating expats.

How to date them:
Don't flirt with them in public. Take their numbers and chat with them through Line or WhatsApp.

The Ones Who Are Conventional
The Indonesian society is conservative. Most people are told from an early age about what should happen to them in the future and they stick to the plan. For instance, their is a huge consensus among Indonesians that husbands are the head of the household and that the wives should serve them (over 95% - see page 30 here).

Dating or marrying a foreigner is rarely part of this narrative. It is an abnormality on many levels that require some thinking outside the box. For this reason, some Indonesian girls may feel that they should date an Indonesian guy because it is natural and less complicated.

How to date them:
Wait until they get a reality check. Among Indonesian girls who date foreigners, many used to be conventional. They "switched" to bules because they became disappointed with the narrative they were served when they were younger.

The Ones Who Are High Maintenance
Many Indonesian girls expect that their boyfriend will provide for them. I had a Sundanese girlfriend for several years and all her friends were getting some benefits from their respective boyfriends. Some would get a monthly allowance, pulsa on requests, or nice gifts like phones, clothes, perfumes and trips to Bali. A few were even getting cars and nice apartments in downtown Jakarta (those who were dating married men).

If you look closely, the most beautiful Indonesian girls are rarely dating foreigners because they know that most of them would never pay for those things.

How to date them:
Work harder and make more money.

The Ones Who Only Date Muslims
The law regarding interfaith marriage in Indonesia is complicated. As of today, the Indonesian Office of Religious Affairs forbids Muslims to marry people from different faith but allows it for Catholics, Protestants, Buddhists and Hindus.

It is therefore quite natural for a girl who is a devout Muslim to look for a companion of the same faith so that she can actually marry him. She will feel that there is no point in dating someone who does not share the same religious beliefs.

How to date them:
Convert to Islam.

The Ones Who Only Date Indo-Chinese
Rich Indonesian-Chinese girls are probably the hardest to date in Jakarta. They are very careful about their image in their community and they wouldn't ruin their reputation for a random guy. They will choose a boyfriend who will give them a better status.

They also tend to summarize some of the points mentioned above: Many will stay virgin until marriage and they are high-maintenance.

This is also true about the top 5% Indonesian political elite. Its members will often marry within that small community with motivations that are related to status more than love.

How to date them:
Mingle with the Indo-Chinese community and become accepted. Once you belong, you will date any girl easily. Avoid being poor though.

The Ones Who Don't Dare
Many Indonesian girls do not dare dating foreigners because they are shy. Most often, they cannot speak English and feel embarrassed. They don't know the codes of dating someone from another culture: What to say, what to do, how to behave, etc. The fear of being judged is often greater than the fear of death in Indonesia.

Some may also feel they are not "worthy". Surprisingly, some girls who have a whiter skin think they won't be attractive to an expat who, they heard, prefer tanned skins (or this might be another case of humble bragging).

How to date them:
Learn Indonesian. It's the easiest language in the world you have no excuses. Smile all the time and repeat "tidak apa apa".

The Ones Who Only Date Friends
Some Indonesian girls, particularly the younger ones in their late teens will only date guys from within their group of friends. They stick to the same closed group when they party, they do not use dating sites and they politely turn down any outsider trying to flirt with them. They will see a relationship with a foreigner as a threat to their belonging to the group.

How to date them:
You need approval from the whole group of friends. Or you wait until they grow up and start to think for themselves (it usually happens after they graduate and start working).
